FOODiQ The Australian Immunity (AIM) Trial

The Australian Immunity
(AIM) Trial

Outside the box thinking to deliver a remote research study for The a2 Milk Company

iDENTIFY the issue

Social distancing, quarantine, vaccination, delayed subject enrolment, and data collection were all impacted during the COVID-19 pandemic. How could we still deliver a clinical trial with scientific integrity and quality during this time?

iNVESTIGATE the opportunity

Our team investigated and pioneered a randomised controlled study design that was fully remote and virtual with food provision and pathology collection that was scientifically robust.

iMPLEMENT solutions

We designed the 100% remote Australian Immunity Trial, which assessed the effects of a2 milk on immunity and inflammation. A randomised crossover clinical trial which included a run-in period, a washout period, and two intervention periods, with data collection including four blood samples collected across the intervention and 100% of food provision.

The iMPACT we created

  • Rapid recruitment: Target of 100 participants was met within two months of launching study.

  • High participant retention rate: 88% of participants that commenced the first intervention period completed the study.

  • Proactive problem solving: The remote study design required an agile and responsive research team.
